Wednesday 9th May was a red-letter day for the people of Kingscourt and surrounding areas when Minister Heather Humphreys cut the tape to officially open the new CMETB €15 million state of the art second-level school, Coláiste Dún an Rí. In the presence of over four hundred invited guests, the Minister paid tribute to those who had worked tirelessly for many years to provide such a wonderful educational campus in the town. In her address, the Minister praised the architects, design team, local Councillors, CMETB and Oireachtas members as well as the general public for their unwavering commitment to bringing the project to a successful completion.
Principal of the school, Mr. Fergal Boyle thanked all those who dared to dream big and paid special tributes to CMETB and its CE Mr. John Kearney as well as his predecessor Mr. Martin O’Brien for their work for this project. He spoke of the fulfilment of a dream for the people of the area and was loud in his praise for the work of Cllr. Clifford Kelly in believing that this project would become a reality.
Councillor Clifford Kelly spoke of his personal pride in seeing the fulfilment of the project. Addressing those assembled in the wonderful Sports Hall in the new school, Mr. Kelly gave a brief history of the journey that had been travelled to have the school built in the town. He thanked all those who through the years, had supported the building of a school in the town.
Shanice Alwell Meegan, a second year student spoke about how the current students and those who might attend in the future are fortunate to have such a wonderful school in the town. Mr. John Kearney CE of CMETB thanked all involved in the setting up of Coláiste Dún an Rí.
The celebrations were enriched by the presence of the school choir and a musical piano recital by first year student Ilona McCarthy.
