Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) was delighted to welcome Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris T.D. to the region on Monday 6th of September 2021.

Minister Harris visited the campuses of Cavan Institute and Monaghan Institute and Kingscourt Youthreach where he toured each facility and met with CMETB staff and learners and Chairpersons of the Boards of Management.

Speaking today, Minister Harris said: “I was delighted to meet some of the incredible people teaching and studying in the Further Education Institutes in Cavan and Monaghan today, and I was equally inspired by the selfless work being carried out for the community at the Youthreach Centre in Kingscourt.

“We need to move away from this model that all roads lead to the big city for access to further or higher education. What I have seen today, and indeed in other institutes across the country, is that opportunities to create career pathways are available both locally and nationally.

“Separately, over the past 18 months certain things had to be done to keep people safe, but we are in a different space now in terms of the pandemic, and I am thrilled to see that students can once again begin to safely enjoy the college experience.”

Minister Harris was also pleased to confirm approval has been granted for a new modular building for Cavan Institute.

“The new development will enable the delivery of a range of PLC programmes, including but not limited to: music production, science, beauty, sports, animal care, sports therapy and general skills programmes. It will also provide canteen and sports facilities and office space.”

Minister Harris added: “This is a really important investment in Cavan and I am pleased to be able to confirm the start of this journey here today.”

John Kearney, Chief Executive of Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board, said:

The announcement by the Minister of funding for Modular Accommodation for Cavan Institute is most welcome and provides immense confidence and assurance for the Institute in promoting for further growth and development.

It was also a fantastic opportunity for our learners and staff to speak with the Minister about their studies and work.”

Dr. Linda Pinkster, (Director of Further Education and Training, CMETB)  in stated that “We are delighted that Minister Harris took time from his busy schedule to visit Cavan and Monaghan Further Education & Training Centres today. His visit is very welcome and timely as the Leaving Cert results and CAO offers come out. Both Cavan Institute and Monaghan Institute have a wide range of courses to suit school leavers and mature learners and enable them to achieve a qualification and then progress to Higher Education or employment.  There are so many further education and training opportunities for learners in CMETB, and it is great that Minister Harris was able to see a sample of these on his visit today. “
