Plans for a major extension of Virginia College, Cavan have taken a step forward as the Department of Education and Skills has approved grant funding to progress the project.
The development will include the construction of a multi-storey extension to the existing school building and the provision of a special educational needs base. The significant programme of work for the post-primary school details nine new general purpose-built classrooms, two Special Education Teacher (SET) rooms, three science labs with two additional prep areas and a two classroom SEN base.
Notification of the funding was received after plans submitted to the department by Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) were approved. The project highlights the commitment of CMETB in delivering quality and all-round inclusive education opportunities for the young people of Cavan.
Confirmation that Virginia College project is developing has been greatly welcomed by CMETB. John Kearney, Chief Executive, Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board, said; “We are delighted that the Department is making a significant investment in new permanent accommodation at Virginia College, Cavan. The project is a major boost for the school and will further enhance the educational experience of students and staff at the school.”

The new extension to our school facilities follows on from three previous developments and ensures that Virginia College can continue to offer a full curriculum for current students and serve the needs of the local growing community into the future.”
Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board will now appoint a design team to deliver the project.
