Exciting Developments at Cavan Institute

January 15, 2020

There are many positive and exciting developments happening at Cavan Institute. At present, Cavan Institute has an enrolment of approximately 1,100 full-time students and 800 part-time students under the night school provision.

These developments include the establishment of a state-of-the-art training kitchen and purpose-built training restaurant at Cavan Institute’s Cathedral Road Campus, to accommodate the Hospitality courses.

Recently, as part of their final assessments, the Hospitality Traineeship students and the Commis Chef apprentices provided a wonderful display of hospitality and culinary expertise by cooking and serving a 3-course meal to the board members of CMETB at their December meeting.  The new training kitchen and restaurant will be an exceptional resource for these students entering the hospitality sector. The Hospitality Traineeship and Commis Chef Apprenticeship courses are widely regarded as excellent programs within the region to meet the skills gap within this thriving sector.

Further projects at Cavan Institute include the move to new temporary accommodation in the former Army Barracks of several courses in preparation for a new purpose build facility for Cavan Institute and other ETB Services such as Traineeships and Apprenticeships currently been offered by CMETB.

Cavan Institute also has strong links with Institutes of Technology, such as Athlone Institute of Technology, Sligo IT and Dundalk Institute of Technology as well as Universities, such as Maynooth and UCD.  Students can now start their first year of degree programs in Cavan Institute.

The Institute has maintained its position as the third largest Post Leaving Certificate College (PLC) in Ireland with 80 full time PLC course, 3 Traineeships courses in Hospitality, Youth Work and Homecare Assistant and a Commis Chef Apprenticeship.

The next national strategic plan for Further Education and Training cites “Colleges of the Future” and Cavan Institute is superbly positioned to meet this strategic aim, as the Institute is one of only two PLC Colleges in the country offering PLC courses, Traineeships, Apprenticeships, and a Youthreach programme under the one roof.
