CMETB receives once-off COVID-19 grant to support disadvantaged students in FET Sector in Accessing ICT Devices

August 25, 2020

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science has allocated €5 million of capital funding nationally for a Once-Off Covid 19 Grant to support disadvantaged students in the Further Education and Training (FET) sector in accessing ICT devices, primarily laptops.  This will be in the form of a grant from SOLAS to ETBs (and other relevant FET providers). CMETB is delighted to announce it has been allocated €211,000 of this fund.

In response to Covid-19, there was an immediate shift to online and blended models of learning to ensure continuity of education for learners. This need will remain in the 2020/2021 academic year. Recent months have highlighted the digital divide and the difficulty some learners have in accessing online learning. This fund should assist in bridging that divide. In launching this initiative, Minister Simon Harris stated that

“The focus will be on ensuring disadvantaged students will have access to the devices”.

CMETB will use the grant to support disadvantaged students in its Further Education and Training centres to access ICT devices. When CMETB FET centres re-open next month, registered learners will be advised of the application process and eligibility criteria should they wish to have a device on loan during their period of study.

CMETB hopes that this initiative will support its learners and work to bridge the digital divide.
