The Department of Education has approved major extension works to be carried out at Breifne College, Cavan and Coláiste Dún an RÍ, Kingscourt.
The announcement follows recent engagement by Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) with the Department of Education where CMETB Chief Executive, John Kearney highlighted the “pressing demographic needs to expand both schools”.
The Department of Education thus identified that there will be significant increase in demand for the Cavan School Planning area and has requested Mr Kearney’s approval to increase the long-term permanent enrolment at Breifne College to 1,200 pupils, to take effect from September 2021. The current enrolment of Breifne College is 800 pupils.
The Department of Education also identified the need for additional post-primary provision in the Kingscourt area and has requested Mr Kearney’s approval to increase the long-term permanent enrolment at Coláiste Dún an Rí to 1,000 pupils, to take effect from September 2021. The present enrolment of Coláiste Dún an Rí is 530 pupils.
To cater for these increases in pupil enrolments at Breifne College and Coláiste Dún an Rí, the Department of Education will provide financial support to deliver additional accommodation at the schools both in terms of interim accommodation and permanent accommodation. The Department of Education is currently engaging with CMETB to progress matters.
John Kearney, Chief Executive, Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board, said: “This is especially great news for both Cavan schools as the investment builds on the progress that we have made over the last number of years reaffirming CMETB’s commitment to serving the school community and providing quality learning environments across the region. The investment is also a testament to the excellent teaching and learning occurring at both schools.”
John Crotty, Principal at Breifne College welcomed the news: “We are delighted with the announcement which will greatly enhance the facilities at Breifne College allowing our current and prospective pupils to continue to engage in high quality teaching and learning.”
